Some independent midwives(both CNM's and DEM's) in the USA use sterile water injections(if the mother desires this of course): usually you inject a small papule of sterile water just under the skin into two points on either side of the sacrum about s2 and s4 if I remember correctly. Like tens machines it works on the GATE theory of pain control. Stings like crazy for awhile (normal saline does not work: doesn't sting) then there is some relief of back pain: works like a charm for some not at all for others. Will be interesting to see the outcome of the research study.
