WOMEN PREFER MIDWIVES TO PROVIDE THEIR PREGNANCY
CARE
PLANNERS SHOULD MAKE MORE USE OF MIDWIVES WHO PRACTISE MIDWIFERY
IN THE TRUE SENSE.
Administrators of maternity services should be
encouraging midwives to take on their own caseload (provide continuity of care
to women) - increasing their skills in dealing with birth
emergencies.
Midwives thus encouraged to become primary carers would
then be able to accomodate the growing need for natural births either at home
or in natural birthing centres. This would free-up GPs to concentrate on
practising family medicine.
There is really no place for GPs in pregnancy
care of healthy women unless they have a temporary need for referral for some
acute medical episode.
Emphasise BEST PRACTICE in maternity care and
that means continuous care from the one person i.e. midwife for the majority
(healthy women) and obstetrician for those with obstetric
problems.
Good luck with your submission. The more consumers push to
have their needs met through a holistic maternity care program the more
midwives will begin to listen and
respond.

Australia - representing CARES SA and also
Maternity coaltion SA. I

attitudes to and expectations of medical services?
