Hi Paul, Thanks for that - sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I completely deleted the SharePoint Drafts folder which was empty but still have the same issue - it is like it is locked within Sharepoint somewhere - deep in the bowels perhaps. Any other ideas.

NB that it is checked in when we try this and that no one has it checked out. However it appears to be machine related - If I sign onto the Intranet on my colleagues machine I can check out the same document without any issue.
