I've been using this tool to move _catalog directories (master pages, web parts...), sites and libraries between dev/prod farms with great success. This tool is so easy to use it almost makes me glad I never went down the feature route. If only Content Types were stored this way! :)
It just seems to know what to take and how to put it back. It provides a detailed log and has not failed me yet. It includes various options for including descendents, versions and security settings. And it doesn't bug out at the slightest error. In my initial comparison between this and stsadm (for sitecolleciton backups) the produced CMP file was so much smaller than its STSADM counterpart that I thought something must have gone wrong. Until the Content & Structure Tool is updated to work between collections and farms (soon please!) I will continue to use this utility.
