I've been using this tool to move _catalog directories (master pages, web
parts...), sites and libraries between dev/prod farms with great success. This
tool is so easy to use it almost makes me glad I never went down the feature
route. If only Content Types were stored this way! :)

It just seems to know what to take and how to put it back. It provides a
detailed log and has not failed me yet. It includes various options for
including descendents, versions and security settings. And it doesn't bug out
at the slightest error.

In my initial comparison between this and stsadm (for sitecolleciton backups)
the produced CMP file was so much smaller than its STSADM counterpart that I
thought something must have gone wrong.

Until the Content & Structure Tool is updated to work between collections and
farms (soon please!) I will continue to use this utility.

Any implementation which moves a file and also preserves version history
information etc. is most probably making use of the PRIME API (Content
Deployment)

Check out this codeplex project developed by Chris O'Brien -
http://spdeploymentwizard.codeplex.com/

Which contains source code, and seems like it can be used for moving individual
documents as well.

Sounds like you need WISDOM DMF<http://www.macroview.com.au/WisdomDMF.htm> to
manage your files.

It does versions etc nicely as a bonus.

It sounds awfully like something/someone has broken security inheritance on the
library on certain files. Are you able to recheck the problematic files to
ensure their security settings are correct and try again?

Also, are the all 1 kind of file or a complete mixture of files?

Yep. It only does it to certain files and not all files.

Site collection administrators can do it fine, site owners can't. Site owners
have all the standard permissions a site owner would normally have.

I assume you have full rights to the destination and the source. Do you have
delete rights on the source?

This one only gets recorded in the 12\Logs files. Can happen irrespective of
which method you use to perform the move. It appears to affect particular files
only.
