Resolved: The field definition included the version attribute. Once I deleted this and re-imported the column it was editable again.

In doing this I've now noticed that when copying an item from another site collection to the doc library in this site collection, the column's values are not being updated. Do the site column IDs have to match for this to occur?? Surely a column of the same name, in the same group and part of the same content type should be sufficient!??! But I'd dearly like to know why it's happening as this would be a nasty fix for a well-populated farm. I feel it's got to do with versioning and the fact that these columns were migrated. Could there be a hidden value I could change to fix this in future?
