When writing my book, and setting my server for user profiles, I quickly
despaired of that error, so I added all my sharepoint system accounts to the
domain admin group - and what do you know? it worked.
However, Master SharePointer Spence Harbar has explained it all in a
fantastic blog post (look under the heading "Create and Configure Accounts
and Permissions"): http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx
