Can you just make it a single line of text field and then supply a
calculated value?

Thanks for the solution but it doesn't look like you can select from a
multiline text field in a calculated column.

That's actually a very good idea. Have you used this successfully Mark?

Would you just use something like =LEFT([Col1],255).

Would it also make sense to convert the column to plain text, if it
isn't already, or will the calculated column just grab the displayed
text and ignore any source formatting?

Set up a calculated field that selects the first 255 characters of the
multi line text. Sort on the calculated field.

I don't think you can convert the type of a field after it has been
created, you may need to create a new "single line of text" field, then
copy across all the data from the "multiple lines of text" to the newly
created field, then continue to use the new field from that point on.

Of course this depends on any dependancies on the old "multiple lines of
text" field, such as customisations that use the old field, this sort
of thing can get messy. So much pain to go through just to allow sorting
on that field.

Hi All

We have a list and there is a requirement to sort a particular "multiple
lines of text" column. Unfortunately it doesn't look like you can sort
this column type.

Is there any way to convert a "multiple line of text" field into a
"single line of text" field so it can be sorted?

Nathan
