The last time I did this in 2007, I used the advanced search function. Edit the web part to show scopes and view it in the web page. Now copy the HTML source for the entire web part into your preferred html editor. Now you can change the preferred scope/s to hidden fields and remove any scopes you do not wish to search (and do whatever customisations you would like). Copy this html to a content editor web part and remove the advanced search - and this should return just the results for the scope you are seeking.
