Could it be the loopback check?

got a very strange issue here that is starting to really bug me.

I have alternate access mappings in place for my main SharePoint site
collection. e.g. http://siteCollection default. I also have an ip address (for
VPN users who don’t use the DNS) e.g. http://xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa, and then the
machine was originally set up with a dns name of sp1 – so I also have
http://sp1.

On the workstations, I can access the site through any of these – though the
default and preferred is http://sitecollection. BUT, I often work using remote
access on the server, and for some reason, it won’t authenticate me on
http://sitecollection while working on this server. It’s a virtual server, so I
have even manually added the ip to the hosts file in case there is a dns issue.
I can “ping sitecollection” without an issue, but when I try to access
http://sitecollection, I am prompted for a username and password (even though
its windows authentication) and regardless of the login details I provide
(mine, or the farm admin account) I can’t get the page to load…

Any suggestions on what could be wrong here? It seems so simple – but I am out
of ideas.
