The balancing act is all around the see-sawing AU exchange rate; which is very
volatile. When it goes near parity, you will find the Adobe store good value.
In the reverse, local Resellers will be cheaper.

Adobe's policy was that it did not want to have "spot" pricing; rather a
set-a-price at product launch time.

As resellers/distributors buy at the monthly rate; their prices are usually
more flexible.

Smaller online resellers "drop ship" from distributors -- which reduces
overhead. Bigger resellers hold stock and give credit, etc.

The market is very competitive -- and vendors generally don't want to stuff up
a working market.

Anyways, I hope this helps some more. The article and quotes from builderau are
pretty well on-the-mark.

Don't forget licensing: you get Mac+Win serial numbers!! FTW!!

Also note I am a happy Adobe Master Collection CS4 customer! (and my name is in
the About Box... of InDesign CS4 :-) )

@Nick

what you say is pretty much echoed by Adobe's recent response

http://www.builderau.com.au/news/soa/Adobe-defends-Aussie-CS4-price-hike/0,339028227,339292257,00.htm

I threw Aral Balken's comment in there to show that it's a common
problem and finger pointing shouldn't just happen to one high profile
vendor.

I suppose the take-away is that "justice" (ie fair pricing for non-US
customers) doesn't just need to be done, it needs to be _seen_ to be
done...
