Great stuff! A suggestion. Maybe for the country that is selected you could make the circle filled or animated (like a give it a shiny gloss) so that it stands out. I played the timeline while selecting a country but the information box isn't well linked to the circle visually even though it is surrounded by an extra yellow circle it didn't stand out that well maybe because there are other yellow circles too.
Also I had the mouse over the timeline so the X-axis label was hidden. It took me a while to find it! When it stops playing at the end you could change the play button to a replay button. It might be good to make the "international region section" button always visible if the panel is open so it's easy to close. Might be nice to be able to select two or more countries and have a line drawn between them to see the difference (maybe even an option to hide other countries). I haven't read the help but the concept of clicking on an area of the screen is great. Contextual help is rare these days be invaluable.
