>Do you have some more information or a particular article that led you to this problem/solution? Not really. After floundering around, I actually thought to check the list of services running on the server after start-up to see if there were any "Automatic" ones that weren't started. There were two, and by starting them manually I was able to isolate the VMWare one pretty quickly as the culprit (though I had to chuckle about the other one. A generic error message referring to the specific service was a kind of diagnostic-Zen on the part of whoever came up with that particular error message.) After looking around the net a bit regarding this particular service, I discovered that it is not uncommon for it to be installed on a template server but not on a new server created from the template. I've escalated it to our VMWare guys for further investigation. Dylan.

But it hasn't! This is actually pretty useful to know. A lot of the clients I have worked with are running ESX and this usually encompasses their TFS and Team Build servers. Do you have some more information or a particular article that led you to this problem/solution? But it hasn't! Turns out it is due to a "VMWare Boot Run Service" that is not present on the servers. Disabled it, and now they start up fine. Sorry for the distraction, Cheers, Dylan. ________________________________ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Grant Molloy Sent: Tuesday, 11 August 2009 10:17 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Service has failed... But it hasn't! Hi Dylan, You say the issue is mainly on your TFS servers.. Are they doing continuous builds?? Is the error only being logged at the time a build is running ?? We had this issue (or similar) and it was related to the build process. We were signing our apps with a security key, but the key wasn't installed on the TFS server, so during the TFS build process, a popup box was trying to launch to ask for the password for the security key.. To fix it, we had to import the security key onto the TFS server using the same account as the TFS build process.. Hope this helps.. Grant.
