New York, NY - February 27, 2015 Today, NYC NOWC and the NYC worker cooperative community passed its first piece of legislation in a generation. With 49 in the affirmative, 2 absent, and 0 in the negative, Intro 423 passed at 2:30 PM on February 26, 2015. Under the new law, New York City will now issue annual reports on the amount of goods and services it purchases from democratic, worker-controlled businesses; and recommendations on how to lower barriers for worker cooperative participation in city procurement. A press rally on February 25, 2015 preceded the vote––with speeches from Council Members Helen Rosenthal and Carlos Menchaca, as well as representatives from NYC NOWC (pronounced *nick nock*), FPWA, Green Worker Cooperatives, Beyond Care, Pa'lante Green Cleaning, and Diaspora Destinations. The bill's sponsors included: Helen K. Rosenthal, Carlos Menchaca, Maria Del Carmen Arroyo, Margaret S. Chin, Peter A. Koo, Mark Levine, Rosie Mendez, Antonio Reynoso, Ydanis A. Rodriguez, Stephen T. Levin, Annabel Palma, Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., Costa G. Constantinides, Brad S. Lander, Jumaane D. Williams, Vanessa L Gibson, James Vacca, Daniel R. Garodnick, Daniel Dromm, and James G. Van Bramer.
