You may want to have a look at hypercube topology. For a cloud of 2^N nodes, each node is going to have N connections and the path between any two nodes will be N hops maximum. Hypercube get a bit tricky when the number of nodes is not a power of two. Also rebuilding the cube when nodes are joining or leaving is not a trivial task. I think I was asking about hypercube on this list few months ago and got some good references in response.
