I've done some mailing list archeology, and found this: http://marc.info/?l=freenet-dev&m=97941517228546&w=2 Its a reference to content hashing on 12th Jan 2000, suggesting that we probably came up with the idea in late 1999. I'm sure with some further digging I might be able to find an earlier reference.
