As far as I've ever been able to tell, the answer to this question is
as simple as: distribute large file/data distribution, centralize
everything else.

The only other examples of useful p2p I've ever seen have to do with
disaster relief/post conflict zones where your entire infrastructure
is gone. The wireless mesh networks being laid down in developing
regions also come to mind, but those are both very small use cases on
Internet scale.
