Backing up a bit: The documentation for "floating network devices" is all about port-security and linkdown traps. Does this feature work at all if the parent switch is configured for 802.1x/MAB?
I have mostly Cisco 3560's, and a few Cisco 6509's. The general idea was to do 802.1X/MAB on most ports, and use some sort of cheap switch for port multiplication/media conversion as needed.
