Hi there,

Currently we have PacketFence (3.6.1) up and running and it's working great!
All our AccessPoints (AeroHive) and switches (HP Procurve) are connected to pf.
As most users, we are running it in an educational environment. This means that
our own PC's used for exams etc are listed in pf, so are the devices used by
the administration of the school (i.e. PC's and printers). To make sure that
they are placed in the correct VLAN, we created device categories and placed
these device in the right category. Students can now bring their own device,
register it in pf and use the WLAN. Since the start of this setup we now have
2000+ devices, with just +/- 900 students.
The problem we discovered is that the devices are registered and never expire.
Luckily pf has a possibility to enable expiration (node.expire in pf.conf). Now
we wonder if it is possible to let just the WLAN devices (default category)
expire. According to the pf site (advanced_features.html) " With little
customization it is also possible to do this on a device category basis." We
would like to know what this little customization is. We can't find in the
documentation, on the site, google, whatever.
So the question we have is: "How do we set expiration on a node category?".

Maybe we miss the point and is this not really necessary, because the
node.expire setting only acts when a device is not used for X time. The
printers and PC's our employees and students use are usually active during the
day, so if X is high enough, it would also solve the problem. I can't get any
good info on this too.

We really hope there is an answer to this question, because we REALLY like this
product and are advising and helping other schools in our neighborhood with it.

Cheers!
