Thanks for the obvious comment as this was not so obvious to me -- :-D

I checked and you were right,  somehow the switch allowed for the 802.1x mab on 
a router port. (wow)

Anyhow,  it seems to work!  Excited.... not sure why this isn't a supported 
config in the documentation...

Can you post an example port from the switch config?  This looks like the port 
is not set to be a switchport.
