Could you be more specific about what you want?
I does tell you if the username and password are not accepted I believe.

Not at the moment.
Anything is possible, but that would require hacking the code for the
authentication source as well as the captive portal.
You may be better off just adding a message to the template that says that you
are allowed three attempts.
