Hello, I’m back with new info:
I moved the hard drive to another pc of mine and reinstalled Debian.
After I’ve completed the PacketFence installation just as always the
configurator was up and running.
This could mean that the other (newer) PC has issues with the hardware
or some other problem somehow related to that (e.g. firmware).
I’m tending to something with the firmware since the newer PC requires
firmware-linux-nonfree to run without complaints during startup.
Any further thoughts about this ?
Regards,
Mark L.

We currently can’t leave that possibility out.
As Fabrice said, PF seems to be running completely fine on any other
system, but that doesn’t mean then PF couldn’t cause the issue.
I’m planning to test it on my second pc to if it’s running there but I
don’t expect the result to help me finding the cause in any way.
The most hope I’ve got is in that gdb report I posted, but due to my
lack of knowledge in perl, apache- and pf-internals I’m not able to
really trace down the segfault to it’s root.
That’s why I asked here :)

Mark L.

Could this be a hardware issue in some way?
I'm running PF on 8.5 without any problem...

Hello Mark,
can you give me access to your setup ?
It's really weird since we don't have any issue when we
install packetfence on Jessie.

Hello All/Fabrice,
I tried to install PF several times now and it always
happens to run into the same error each time.
I tried to pinpoint the SegFault but I don’t have enough
experience with perl, apache internals and the pf
internals so I did not come any further to knowing what
causes this.
All I can say is that it seems to occur when it’s trying
to load the module pfappserver.
I would really appreciate if someone could take a look
further into this since we need a working instance of PF
in our school.
(Our school is currently participating in a test project
regarding WLAN and proper NAC for schools in Northern
Germany.)
Just to repeat:
-Fresh install of Debian 8.5 (Firmware-linux-nonfree,
firmware-realtek, sudo) (altering the choice of additional
packets during installation made no difference)
-Fresh install of PacketFence (deb
http://inverse.ca/downloads/PacketFence/debian jessie jessie)
-Reboot
-Httpd.admin does not start due to a SegFault (coredump
here: http://pastebin.com/aXRCfw00 )
Reported by “apache2 -e debug -D debian -X -f
/usr/local/pf/var/conf/httpd.conf.d/httpd.admin”
-No related errors found in the logs
-ZEN-Edition works fine when started from USB drive
Since the server did not previously and does not currently
have any sensible data on it, I’m also allowed to offer
remote access for diagnosis.

Mark L.

Hello Fabrice,
After your response I tried it again.
-Installed Debian (only selecting: Standard utilities and
SSH-Server)
-Installed firmware-linux-nonfree and firmware-realtek
-Added pf-repo
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade (everything already up to date)
apt-get install packetfence
èAfter the installation
https://ip_of_computer:1443/configurator is offline
èReboot : httpd.admin offline
èsudo /usr/local/pf/bin/pfcmd service httpd.admin start
Some warning about NameVirtualHost
~30secs of nothing
Httpd.admin|not started
“apache2 -e debug -D debian -f
/usr/local/pf/var/conf/httpd.conf.d/httpd.admin”
Again
<Loading of modules>
<said nearly 30secs of no output>
“Segmentation fault”
If you need some special information, just ask.

Hello Mark,
i tried to reproduce the issue but with no luck.
I have a fresh debian 8.5 , the packetfence repo.
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install packetfence
Configurator -> Vlan enforcement ... and at the end all
services started.

Hello Mark,
did you added a specific switch module or did you
started from a fresh install ?

Hey, again, now from the registered mail address.
I took a look a bit further by using this command:
“apache2 -e debug -X -D debian -f
/usr/local/pf/var/conf/httpd.conf.d/httpd.admin”
Turns out that the error preventing the admin
instance from starting is a segmentation fault.
Using apache core dumps I came to the conclusion
that the cause may be the “pfappserver” module may
responsible for that.
GDB info here: http://pastebin.com/aXRCfw00
Thanks for your time,
Mark L.

*Subject: *PacketFence on Debian 8.5 httpd.admin
(configurator) won't start
Hi all,,
I just did a fresh install of Debian 8.5 and tried
to install PacketFence on it according to this manual:
https://packetfence.org/doc/PacketFence_Administration_Guide.html
Everything works fine until I’m told to visit the
configurator.
Long story short, the httpd.admin service won’t start.
I’ve already searched online and took a look at
the logs in “/usr/local/pf/logs/*” but I’ve found
nothing that could help me.
Meaning: Only “httpd.admin.catalyst”,
“pfconfig.log” and “packetfence.log” even had any
error in them.
The most meaningful are those regarding failing
connection attempts to the MySQL database… which
of course isn’t yet configured.
For those who want to take a look themselfes, you
can get the logs here: http://m-lessmann.de/usr.zip
Aditionally:
No, the terminal itself showed no error.
Running this got me “file not found”:
“/usr/sbin/httpd -f
/usr/local/pf/conf/httpd.conf.d/httpd.admin -Ddebian”
(No wonder as httpd.admin really does not exist)
And the error in “httpd.admin.catalyst” just sent
me here:
https://packetfence.org/bugs/view.php?id=1793 (Bug
already marked as resolved)
(Tried the solution too with no effect as
“libdata-alias-perl” isn’t installed)
I hope someone can help me, as it’s frustrating
getting the ZEN live USB to work but not an
installed system on a hard drive…
If you need further information, tell me and I’ll
provide it.
Regards,
Mark
