There are at least three kind of packages in packman. Packages that are build with BUILD_ORIG and BUILD_ORIG_ADDON. (ffmpeg, xine, vlc, libheif, etc) They usually have patented codec disabled in obs. Right now the most critical is h265/hevc. You cannot play such video without packman's packages. Also you would be limited with .heif/.heic pictures. The second kind of packages are the one that obs will not accept because the sources necessary to build them contains precompiled binaries or the compiler needed to build such packages is non free (oracle java vs openjdk). Finally the third kind of package is the one that is just a link against an updated version present in obs. An example is yt-dlp. Such package is update very often upstream. Usually a release 4-6 months old stops working. Unfortunately the package in Leap is not updated as required, leading to a unusable package. Replacing such package with the one from packman does the trick. It is my opinion that packman provides a useful and necessary service for the openSUSE community.
