Sarawak School Attempts Turning Faeces Into Gas
KUCHING, March 27 (Bernama) -- A project is underway at a boarding school
near here to turn faeces into gas.
The project, started three months ago at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan
Padawan with RM200,000 funding from the Science, Technology and Innovation
Ministry, is expected to save the school RM3,500 a month that would
otherwise go to buying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Environmental Advisor to the Sarawak Government, Dr James Dawos, said the
project involved redesigning the toilets and building a bio-digester to
extract methane gas to the kitchen.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had shown interest in the
project as it would benefit the country in terms of saving of natural
resources, he told reporters after a media familiarisation tour of the
Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) in Mambong, about 23 km
from here.
Following the 30 sen a kg increase in the price of LPG on Feb 28, a 14-kg
cylinder of LPG is sold for RM25.62 in Kuching, an increase of RM4.20. The
new price in Serian is RM26.18 per cylinder and in Simunjan RM27.58.
The price increase had come as a burden to boarding schools, especially in
the rural areas, as they have to fork out RM3,500 a month now for LPG.
Earlier, briefing the tour participants, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd
Managing Director Joerg Domroes said the implementation of the Integrated
Solid Waste Management System (ISWMS), which combines the collection,
transportation and disposal of waste under one operating company at KIWMP,
was a holistic approach towards environmental management.
He said the KIWMP was the most modern facility of its kind in Malaysia and
only technologies of the highest standard were deployed and most stringent
international environmental standards were met or surpassed.
"The ISWMS, with state-of-the-art facility designed for ultimate
environmental protection, has set a new benchmark while contributing
actively to the quality of living in the city and the state," he said.
He said the KIWMP, built on 112 hectares of state land, received about 500
tonnes of municipal waste daily from the Kuching City population of about
500,000.
