ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK
Chapter one is the introduction consisting of the background, objectives and
significance of the book. Then, chapter two is mainly concerned with
discussion about agrarian studies in Indonesia and theories that inform how
agrarian protests are viewed by the author.

Chapter three provides background information about land tenure in the
Minangkabau region of West Sumatra and its relationship with Minangkabau
social organization. The second part of this study-setting chapter discusses
the economic development in West Sumatra and its effect on land use.

Chapters four to nine are case studies of five particular agrarian protests
in West Sumatra.

Chapter four is about how a nagari community has carried out agrarian
protests against the military as well as a military crony company since
mid-1998 in Nagari Kapalo Hilalang. This case is important for three
reasons. Firstly, it reveals that the military has participated in agrarian
conflict as a business agent and a controller of land. Secondly, this case
shows how NGOs actively supported local community agrarian protests.
Thirdly, it reveals how the state apparatus and the local community utilize
state laws and customary laws to legitimise their competing arguments.

Chapter five discusses large-scale oil palm plantation development and local
protests in Nagari Kinali where local people have protested against all
seven plantation companies running businesses there since the middle of
1998, with some of these protests having begun in 1993. The Nagari Kinali
case is important because agrarian conflicts between local people and oil
palm companies are related very much to the New Order regime's economic
development and land policies and the ways in which the corporations and the
state apparatus treated local people.
Differently from the other case studies, chapter six and seven analyses how
the Nagari LUKI community was in conflict with a well-established public
enterprise that was economically important for the state. This case also
reveals how the local community struggled against the local state apparatus.

Chapter eight scrutinizes agrarian protests in the Nagari Sungai Kemuyang of
Kabupaten 50 Kota. This case is important for four reasons. Firstly, it
reveals the local community's success in reclaiming all the land controlled
by a private investor and obtaining royalties from a local public water
company. Secondly, this case shows the local community's reaction to land
abandoned by a private investor holding a Commercial Use Lease (HGU).
Thirdly, it shows how this local community struggled not only for land
rights but also for a spring utilized by business. Fourthly, like the case
of Nagari Kapalo Hilalang, this case reveals issues of state land versus
nagari community's communal land.

Chapter nine analyses the Nagari Gunung Malintang community (the GM
community) agrarian protest. This case is different from the four other case
studies because it examines a resolution of the local community agrarian
protest that successfully satisfied local people, analysing the resolution
of the GM community's demands and the factors contributing to the birth of
the resolution and setting out why the solution is successful in meeting the
needs of local people.

Chapter ten is the analysis chapter which answers research questions by
analyzing material presented in chapters four to nine.

Chapter eleven, besides functioning as the summary of the thesis, discusses
how the findings of this study contribute to studies about agrarian protest
in Indonesia.
