The streaky thing is a different problem, one I think we understand and
will probably fix.

In the mean time, I think there's a hack out there that claims to fix it,
probably by tweaking the EZ's LCD registers in a wildly unsupported (but
apparently useful) way.

Anyway, assuming that's corrected, is there a physical reason why contrast
might need to be different at different bit depths?  I can't think of one,
but my knowledge of how the LCD driver and display itself work is only
moderate.
