Off the beaten path...

Dan, have you looked for other not so obvious reasons.  Perhaps it's not
really the prefSetPrefs call but something just prior or post ?

The most common mistakes are resseting ones backup bit, or copy protect flag
by default just incase someone changed it.

Are you mucking with the apps info block ?
