PalmCentral and PilotGear plan implementing real-time registration via
RegCode. PalmCentral may already be doing real-time registration, I haven't
checked lately. PilotGear most recently said May or June 1999 that they
will start real-time registration. RegCode is spelled out in detail at
http://www.palmcreations.com/regcode. PilotGear supports the use of RegCode
by sending you the e-mail address of the person who ordered your app and a
code (ascii Palm User Name or Palm User Name converted to hex) that the user
provides during the ordering process. You calculate an unlock code based
on the information the user provided and e-mail it to the user.
RegCode seems ok to me. I didn't have time to develop my own registration
system so I use it. Real time fullfillment is the key to maximizing buyer
satisfaction. I think most consumers are turned off by copy protection in
general. Making them wait for their unlock code only makes it worse in my
opiniion. Protecting something that has no physical representation is a
challenge.
