Damn, so THAT'S why this shortcut doesn't work for me! Grrrr. Restoring 
the default shortcuts may be trivial but it's certainly not obvious how 
to do so to me. Thanks anyway, Scott, for helping prevent me from going 
crazy wondering what on earth I was doing wrong.

I tried Shortcut-dot-8 on my IIIx (NOT initialized by copying data from 
an older model) and it works fine there. If you're not sure if it works, 
entering shortcut-dot-8 into a memo displays [Inverting Backlight] if it 
works, and nothing if it doesn't. Interestingly enough, after figuring 
this out, I tried creating a new shortcut on my Palm V for shortcut-dot-8 
which was "[Inverting Backlight]" but that doesn't work (it does insert 
the memorized text into a memo, but has no effect on the backlight. 
Alas.).
