Steve,
I found a relatively painless way to restore the default shortcuts, provided
you're willing to give up your custom shortcuts.
When I got the Palm VII, I created a new user first. Later, I upgraded the
device with my existing user name because I wanted to use my licensed copy of
your handy PalmPrint (free plug). Fortunately, I saved the backup data from
the new user and have a copy of the default shortcuts: Graffit_ShortCuts.PRC.
If you prefer, drop me an email offline and I'll send you the file. It's
better that you create this file yourself because I know nothing about
compatibility between shortcut files on the Palm VII and the Palm IIIx,
although I really don't expect a problem.
1) Backup your data with a hotsync.
2) Optional: save your old shortcuts file. It's located in:
[your palm data dir] / [user dir] / Backup
3) Replace the existing shortcuts file with the default shortcuts file.
4) Customize your "System" conduit so that the desktop overrrides the
handheld.
5) Hotsync.
You should now be able to use shortcut .8.

Damn, so THAT'S why this shortcut doesn't work for me! Grrrr. Restoring
the default shortcuts may be trivial but it's certainly not obvious how
to do so to me. Thanks anyway, Scott, for helping prevent me from going
crazy wondering what on earth I was doing wrong.
I tried Shortcut-dot-8 on my IIIx (NOT initialized by copying data from
an older model) and it works fine there. If you're not sure if it works,
entering shortcut-dot-8 into a memo displays [Inverting Backlight] if it
works, and nothing if it doesn't. Interestingly enough, after figuring
this out, I tried creating a new shortcut on my Palm V for shortcut-dot-8
which was "[Inverting Backlight]" but that doesn't work (it does insert
the memorized text into a memo, but has no effect on the backlight.
Alas.).
