Change MTU to increase throughput?

Dear all,

I am using PPP on TCPIP to make Palm Pilot and PC talk together directly
through hotsync cable. The result is success but the throughput
(transfer rate) is not satisfactory. It is about 1000bytes/sec. Then I
find that the Palm interface is using MTU of 576. Can I increase this
value so as to increase the througput of my application?

P.S. I have roughly go through the ref3.pdf and it seems to say that you
cannot modify MTU in Palm. Really? Why not!?
