For a tab-interface I'm quite proud of, take a look at our Athlete's 
Diary application (you can see screenshots at 
<http://www.stevenscreek.com/pilot/tad.shtml> or of course download the 
application too). It uses bitmaps to produce sideways tabs, which just 
seemed to "feel better" for this particular application. And, to ward off 
questions, no, the Palm doesn't have a secret API for sideways text!
