4bit grayscale pointers?

hi!

  i have a specific application to write that required 4bit grayscale
  (16 levels) - does anyone know of a good starting point to find 
  information on this?

  has anyone coded any graphics libraries (like win2)? just asking
  before i end up doing it myself..
