My bet is a "window pane" approach that been used quite successfully in
industrial computing environments. This would entail a display that is a
multiple in area of the original display. For example you could have
resolutions of 240 x 120 (two panes horizontal) , 120x240 (two pains
vertical) or 240x240 (four panes in a square).
That is, take the current 120x120 windows and make whatever old application
that is drawn in that only aware of that section of the window. You don't
have the full dragging and resizing as you do a desktop. The user can now
move the application to different panes considering the size of the
display. Only new applications would be aware of the new screen sizes with
an extension of the API.
Then again, the compact size and form factor is what has made this platform
successful. The "vague references" could just be good old software
development abstraction conscienceness so you don't code yourself in a
corner.
