ANOTHER highlight of the conference also featured David Pogue, but the
vast majority of the attendees have no clue it happened. One of the many
"breakout" sessions was one entitled "PalmOS Roadmap" where they
discussed plans for the future (and beyond). Actually I got there late so
I missed most of it, nothing really interesting to report (they may have
said something about 600 MHz but perhaps I wrote that down wrong ;-) ).
Anyway, after this session was over, out on the stage come about 6-8
members of DevSupp, all featuring red reindeer ears, plus the
aforementioned Mr. Pogue, dressed entirely in red. The group, with
DevSupp as the chorus and Pogue on keyboard, then proceeded to seranade
the crowd with not one, not three, but probably ten and maybe even a
dozen Christmas carol parodies (supposedly inspired by the vaguely
Christmas-tree appearance of the PalmSource logo). I'm afraid I was
laughing too hard to really remember any of the words, the only thing
that comes to mind was something like "O come, all ye developers.. O come
ye, o come ye to PalmSource 99". It would be GREAT if someone with the
words (David - hint, hint!) would publish them somewhere for everyone to
read, even better if this session is on tape and becomes the "bonus
track" on the PalmSource CD.
I *believe* that Maurice Sharp is the author of some (all?) of the songs,
at least I know that was the case last year when a similar thing
happened. In addition to Maurice, the brave singers included David Fedor,
Bruce Thompson, Cherie Leonard, Jor Bratko, and one or two more who I'm
not remembering. At least one of the crowd has a beautiful chorale voice,
I'm told that it was David F. As for the rest, well, they were way better
than I, that's for sure, and a LOT more gutsy! And David P. did a nice
job on keyboard, and he wasn't even faking it.
Truly a memorable few minutes, well worth the price of admission.
And about David P., for those who haven't seen him, go rent The Big Easy
and check out the scene where Dennis Quaid's lawyer Lamar rolls his eyes.
That will give you some idea of the way Pogue does his public speaking.
Mahvelous!
