This is more of a customer support question, and perhaps that's why there
weren't any responses on this development (i.e. coding) oriented list.

But... two things to try, which I believe are in the manual, but I'm not
sure. First, try holding down the up-arrow button while pushing the reset
button. Hold the up-arrow all the way until you see the Prefs application.
Then go and delete whatever application you just installed that is messing
things up :-) This reset style doesn't let the installed application know
that a reset has occurred, which can sometimes get you past the problem if
an app has a bug that causes it to crash when it gets the reset
notification.

If that doesn't work, doing a hard reset is close to, but not exactly, what
you wrote. You need to hold the power button while pressing reset, and
keep holding the power button for a good 15 seconds or so. When you
release it, you should see the "Erase all data?" question. If you release
the button too soon, it will just do a soft reset, which doesn't give you
the opportunity to erase the data.

The customer support folks might be able to give you a better (and
interactive, via the 800 number) hand if you're still having trouble.
