unit auto off

i did a few thing inside the event loop where i count the # of nilevents.
once the count reaches up to a certain # if the user is in a certain form
then an action occours.  but for some reason the handheld doesn't turn off??
i can set it to 1, 2, 3 min's and it stays up.  what sort of things can
cause the unit to stay open?
