Newbie GNU Link problems

I keep getting the following error when linking with GCC and the Symbol
ScanMgr.lib file:
"file not recognized: File format not recognized"

Is it possible that the .lib files that symbol distributes is not
compatible with GNU's GCC?

I have spent at least 40 hours on this problem so any help would  be
great!
