  a <op>= y     is an "abbreviated way" for writing  a = a <op> (y)

  ie:   a += 10 -->  a = a + 10

  ~myvar is a binary inversion of an integral variable

  the beauty of C are these little cryptic things :) once you
  learn them.. you love em :) wait until you start seeing things
  like this:

    i++, ++i and a combination:    i+++++i :)

  there are even competitions on this type of thing.. how to
  write useful programs that are totally illegible :)

    The International Obfuscated C Code Contest
    ftp://ftp.uu.net/pub/ioccc/

  if you get time.. check em out :)) some amusing stuff there

  to get started, be sure to buy the C programmers BIBLE :)
  which is available on amazon or you can probably find it
  in your library (it is that old).. here are the details:

    ISBN 0131103628
    The C Programming Language
    Brian Kernighan, Dennis Ritchie

  hope this helps.

  cheers.
