a <op>= y is an "abbreviated way" for writing a = a <op> (y)
ie: a += 10 --> a = a + 10
~myvar is a binary inversion of an integral variable

the beauty of C are these little cryptic things :) once you
learn them.. you love em :) wait until you start seeing things
like this:
i++, ++i and a combination: i+++++i :)
there are even competitions on this type of thing.. how to
write useful programs that are totally illegible :)
