Note that the contrast situation was at least partially addressed by the
3.1.1 patch, so if you haven't yet installed that update, do.
Also consider what the contrast settings are, when running 3.3 or 3.5. I
believe they'll be as good as, or better than, the 3.1.1 patch makes them.
In 3.5 you can change the palette to get whatever shades of gray that the
screen supports. Prior to 3.5, there's no supported API short of banging
registers. But if you do that, please make sure you're on an os version
that you have tested on, since in 3.5 the situation is different and you've
got real, safe APIs to use.
