You might also want to check out Waba (www.wabasoft.com)
The current release is Beta 9, but I think it's in a more
useable form for development right now than KVM.
They are careful to say that it is not Java (presumably
because to claim this they need to meet certain Sun
standards they don't quite meet yet) ... but it's close
enough. Here's an excerpt from their FAQ:

Waba is its own programming platform including a language, virtual machine,

tools to write Waba programs and Waba programs can run as Java applets or
applications with no native code.
Waba applications can run under Java but, for the most part, Java programs
that use the Java Class Libraries can't run under Waba.
