Sorry, I left out a key piece of information.
The devices will be attached to run-boxes. These are plastic boxes that
carry our product through the factory. The device will serve in part as
a record of activities that have occured for the lot.
They are not going to be used by an individual, but rather will travel
with the product through the factory.
They have to be removeable - the boxes get cleaned. The device needs
it's battery changed, etc. but they would be synced via IR when needed
while still attached to the box, and would not generally be handled off
the box.
