I think if you start with the assumption that most apps will use this
feature, then I agree with you.

That's why the guideline to NOT use this feature is so important.  If
everyone only uses it when its appropriate (e.g. for vertical markets),
then there's no problem.

We have to rely on our developers to do the right thing for the users.
(That reliance is baked into virtually all the Palm OS APIs.)

In this case, as you've so clearly pointed out, the 'right thing' for the
user, and hence for everyone to do, is be very judicious on the use of this
feature.
