Serial and Infrared

Hi,
I'm trying to write a program that will use both the serial
port and the IR port. But it seems that I can only use one.
As when I do SerOpen the IrOpen fails and vise versa. 

Does anyone know if its possible to use both? or do they share some
hardware resources?
