Ok, so I'm seriously behind in my dev list reading, 
but I had to comment here.  I dislike the idea of
secondary "keywords" for the image depths.  I prefer
a fixed-width syntax, with "optional" being designated
by NULL, 0, or empty strings (""), e.g.

        ICONFAMILY ID 1000 "bw.bmp" "" "" "colour.bmp"

which would define the black & white icon & the full 
color icon but skip the 4 & 8-bit greyscale icons.
