I turned on sound (in POSE), then tried to see if it worked by visiting my
own app. When that didn't work, I tried selecting various alert sounds in
the prefs dialog of Datebook, which also didn't sound.

After reading the above message, I did as you mentioned above and selected
alarm sound in the general preference panel. I didn't change it (was
already set to high), but once I did that sounds worked everywhere. So
perhaps it is an initialization type problem?
