In 3.5 the Data manager was tuned so as to dramatically improve performance
doing precisely this. Before you rearchitect your entire solution, and
depending on your timeframe and customers, you might want to consider
upgrades to 3.5 as a very painless solution. (And no, there haven't been
any upgrade announcements made from device manufacturers, quite yet. But
still I thought you'd want to know.)
