What versions of CW and Constructor are you using?

The way to display a grayscale bitmap is to create a Bitmap Family.

In Constructor ...
Select "Bitmap Families", the press Ctrl-K (if using Windows).
Give the family a name and an id, then double-click to open it.
Highlight "Family Items" and press Ctrl-K once for each bitmap in the
family.
For a black and white bitmap, give an id to the 1-bit bitmap and click the
create button.
For a grayscale bitmap with 4 grays, give an id to the 2-bit bitmap and
click the create button.
For a grayscale bitmap with 16 grays, give an id to the 4-bit bitmap and
click the create button.
For a color bitmap (256 colors), give an id to the 8-bit bitmap and click
the create button.
(The bitmaps must be in increasing order of bit-depth.)

When you want to display a member of your bitmap family, use the handle for
the bitmap family. The OS will decide which bitmap to use based on the
current display properties.
