1) no, on the III, pro and personal, when the unit goes into sleep mode the
UART and RS232 converter are shut down.
2) I can't remember exactly but I think it was between 30 and 60mA on a Palm
III (I can't find my original results)
3) The III draws 6mA while on but dozing (screen on but not doing anything),
and up to 30mA while screaming along. Backlighing adds another 30-50mA.
1-2mA is continuously drawn while its in the cradle.

Again, I can't find my results but I remember the III has a little more than
40hrs of continuous use life (with fresh batteries and the processor in doze
mode most of the time) when the serial port is opened or the backlighting
on, usage drops to near 20hrs.  I've gotten 48hrs of continuous testing from
the Versid logging once every 10 seconds. (the serial port is only opened
long enough to retrieve the data, < 1/2sec/cycle)
