FWIW, MIDI files do not contain sound information, just sequence
information. Note on at this time, note off at this time, etc. The device
playing the MIDI file has to generate sounds to associate the note activity
with.
Frequently, a device which can play MIDI is physically capable of playing
digitized audio (the sound actually digitally encoded). The issue is size.
In digital audio the sample rate needs to be about twice the highest
frequency to be reproduced. DATs and CDs normally sample at 44.1kHz or
48kHz/16 bit samples.
Computer sounds are often 22.05kHz/8 bit, and some computer voice is 8kHz/8
bit. It still is quite a bit of data (ex. the Windows 'tah dah' sound is
about 1 second and takes 28K bytes.
The audio output on the Palm is pretty limited as well. One of the guys
here messed around with Palm sound awhile back. He got a Palm IIIx to play
a John Phillip Souza snippet and it sounded like a Kazoo. Bear in mind that
this is the same guy who got an old Epson MX80 printer to play
(recognizably) the opening of the William Tell Overture on a bet.

The Documentation on the Dragonball EZ shows the ability to play direct
8-bit sound samples (vs just midi sounds.)
