"x" to me meant expandable, which suited as the IIIx really did have an expansion slot.
"e" to me meant easy, or enty, which suited as the IIIe was the low cost entry level 
device.
"c" is obviously color, so the IIIc is aptly named.

IIIxe is a poor name ; it is not expandable, it is not an entry level device.  
Unfortuanately
I don't have any better ideas, although I probably would have pushed for IIIg 
(greyscale)
to coincide with the IIIc (color) release.

I wonder how long they plan to go on with roman numerals...
